Heavy Stubble: How to Grow and Maintain The ’10 Day Beard’ Like A Boss
When it comes to beard styles and looks, there is a plethora of them. Depending on where you live to where you work, there could be a bunch of reasons for choosing a specific beard style and look that goes well with who you are and your life and the heavy stubble beard could be one of them.
Regardless of whether your work and life not affecting your beard style, there are always some go-to beard styles that can never go wrong, and heavy stubble is definitely one of them.
The heavy stubble is also known as the “lazy man’s beard“. It has been widely recognized as one of the most attractive beard styles out there.
In a study published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology, the heavy stubble was chosen as the “most attractive beard” by 9991 subjects. In contrast, in another study in the Journal of Personality and Individual Differences, it was considered to be the second most attractive beard style just following the light stubble beard style.
What Is The Heavy Stubble?
The heavy stubble has a length of around 4 to 5 mm or 1/8 inch. It’s also commonly known as the “10 day beard” as it takes an average person about 10 days to grow the amount of facial hair needed for it, but for whatever reasons you’re not the average person you should expect it to take 8 to 12 days. You should also know that the stubble style has a light and medium look which you could look into if you’re interested.
While most beard styles are hard to grow and maintain, which is one of the biggest reasons for people to grow and keep a beard, this style requires the least maintenance. As a result, this specific style is also best for those who are new at growing a beard or don’t want to or have the time to regularly maintain it.
The “10 day beard” look is also a good option for those who have patchy, uneven, or even slow-growing beard since the it has many different styles which we’ll look into in this article, as well as, how to grow and maintain it. In any case, we can guarantee that it’s definitely a lot easier to maintain then a clean shave.
Top Heavy Stubble Styles Out There
Most beard styles don’t offer you the freedom to mix and match, but that’s exactly where the heavy stubble shines. You can choose from a wide range of styles for the heavy stubble, while looking amazing too.
Full Face Heavy Stubble
The barely trimmed 10 day beard usually looks like this. This beard style is about 4 – 5 mm long and the neckline and cheek line are cleaned up so that it doesn’t look messy yet it doesn’t need regular grooming.
Natural Heavy Stubble
This is the perfect look for those with patchy beards. The facial hair usually extends down the neckline all the way to the Adam’s apple and is the perfect style for a rough, scruffy look. It’s one of our favorites and as you can see from the second picture, that a prominent moustache doesn’t hurt with this style either.
The Hollywoodian Heavy Stubble
This is one of the harder ones to pull off, but celebrities can’t seem to get enough of it. Some people also completely shave off their sideburns and cheek area as well giving the lower part of the stubble more prominence and a badass look.
Classic Heavy Stubble
A timeless yet subtle and stylish short beard. The neckline and cheek line are well defined with facial hair on the chin, cheeks and moustache area up to 5mm. It does require considerable grooming every few days as the sharp and stylish feel is what stands out about this style.
Heavy Stubble with Short Sides
Some folks love this style where you keep the hair on your moustache and the chin a few millimetres longer than on the cheeks and sideburns. This helps your face look longer and the chin and upper lip well-defined.
Moustache with Heavy Stubble
This look is not that common, because it’s definitely one of the hardest to pull off, but if you can, you should go for it. It’s got a unique edge compared to the other styles mentioned here and is a great way to stand out.
You do have to regularly groom your stubble as the eyes should be immediately drawn towards your moustache, whatever style they are. But hey, if you’re already into styling your moustache, this is not a big deal.
Heavy Stubble with Shaved Neckline
If you’re one of those with well-defined jaw lines, this could be the perfect look for you. This style definitely highlights the strongest features of your face.
While these are not all the different styles that are possible with the 10 day beard, but these are definitely the ones that will stand out the most so we can’t wait for you to try them out.
How to Grow The Heavy Stubble
The heavy stubble has three phases: the growing, the trimming, and the maintenance phases. It takes around 8 to 12 days to grow. At the end of the growing phase, which is 8 to 12 days, you should have an uneven growth of 4-5mm stubble all over your face and the neck and cheek lines won’t be groomed either.
You could go a step further and keep the borders around the cheek and and neckline shaved while you’re growing the stubble. This way, if this is the first time for you, you can make changes to the lines as you go along.
At the end of the growing phase, it’s totally up to you to trim the stubble even or leave it looking natural and scruffy, both of which as we’ve seen are perfectly amazing heavy stubble styles. Now we’ll look into the trimming and maintenance phase.
How To Trim The Heavy Stubble
Here are the steps to trimming the heavy stubble:
- Wash and exfoliate: Before trimming your beard, make sure to wash your face and beard with lukewarm water. Exfoliate the beard using a facial scrub or an exfoliating wash once a week. This makes sure that excess oil, dead skin cells, and grime is removed from your beard. This also unclogs your beard stubble and allows even trimming.
- Trim your beard: Set your trimmer to 4-5mm using the dial or length guard at your disposal and make sure to trim slowly and carefully throughout the face. Depending on which particular heavy stubble style you go for you can set your trimmer to anywhere around 4-5 mm keeping some parts of the beard shorter than others, otherwise just keep it even all around.
- Define and sharpen the neck and cheek line (or not): Once you’ve trimmed your whole beard, figure out where the neck and cheek line borders end and trim away everything below and above it, respectively. The cheek lines are the borders between the cheek hair and the cheek skin. This part is completely personal preference and depends on your face structure. The key here is imagination. For the neck line, it’s best practice to keep the length between your neckline border and jawlines one or two fingers.
- Define your moustache: Unless you’re focusing on really styling your moustache, this part is fairly simple. Trim or cut away any stray hair above your upper lip and below your nostrils. Some people have stray hair growing on the sides of the moustache as well, which you might want to look out for.
How To Maintain Heavy Stubble
Maintaining the heavy stubble is not that hard and easy to keep it looking clean and professional.
- Regularly wash and exfoliate your beard.
- Keep the neck, cheek, and moustache lines clean and well defined (if that’s your thing) by shaving them at least on a weekly basis.
- Definitely introduce a beard oil into your daily beard care routine.
So that’s all there is to the heavy stubble beard. From being the most attractive beard styles, it is also one of the easiest to maintain, and with so many different stubble styles, the 10 day beard accommodates all the different face structure and beard quirks out there. With that being said, we hope you give this style a shot.
