1. Take a Cooler Shower

Even though taking a nice, long, hot shower seems like the highlight of your evening after a long day of work, doing so may be more detrimental than helpful. Fact of the matter is even though hot showers do a great job of opening the pores and relaxing the muscles, it can also cause your skin to become dry. Since you’re showering in such warm water, it’s actually washing away the natural oils that your skin produces, causing dry skin. To avoid this, shower in a moderately-warm shower.

2. Cleanse

If you notice that your beard is itchy, it may just need to be cleaned. When dirt, skin and oil build up on the skin, it can cause irritation and lead to itchiness. In order to prevent this from happening, cleanse the beard at least once a week with either a beard shampoo or a medicated dandruff shampoo.

3. Condition

Dry skin could also be cause by lack of moisture. Many men don’t remember that the hair and skin on the face need to be moisturized and conditioned in order to stay soft and healthy. After the beard is properly cleansed and rinsed, apply a good amount of beard conditioner and leave it on for at least 5 minutes.

4. Rinse Thoroughly

Itchiness can also be caused by conditioner or shampoo not being rinsed out thoroughly. The product will cause build up and irritation of the skin. When rinsing the beard, be sure to run your fingers through it to encourage any shampoo or conditioner that may still be there to make its way down the hair shaft.

5. Completely Dry Beard

After rinsing, not drying the beard completely can cause itchiness, especially if you haven’t moisturized or applied oil to the skin yet. This is important especially if you have hard water, as the minerals in it can cause build up on the skin and hair which will also cause irritation and itchiness.

6. Beard Oil

After drying the beard completely, applying oil can help deter itchiness and maintain the health of the skin and hair. Beard oils are specially formulated to soothe any itchiness you may be experiencing underneath the beard, but another great oil to try is tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which heal the skin and prevent infection from occurring again.

7. Medicate

If you are suffering from severe itching from eczema or psoriasis, you may need to consult a dermatologist in order to get some medication to treat it. While you may be required to shave your beard off in order to ensure full coverage of the skin, getting rid the itch should be the main priority. Once the medication has cleared the inflammation, you may be allowed to let your beard grow back in, but always follow the instruction of your dermatologist. You don’t want to risk the situation possibly getting worse.
